How far is the East Cape from the Cabo Airport?

The East Cape region stretches along the southeastern coast of Baja California Sur, so travel distance and time from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) depend on where you’re headed.

La Ribera / Costa Palmas (Four Seasons Resort)
About 66 km (41 miles) northeast of the airport. The drive typically takes 1 to 1.25 hours on well-paved roads.

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park
Roughly 95 km (59 miles) from the airport. Travel time is 2 to 2.5 hours, with the final stretch after La Ribera being a dirt road that can be bumpy and slow, especially after rain.

Los Barriles
Approximately 108 km (67 miles) northeast of the airport. Expect 1.5 to 2 hours of travel, with most of the route paved and scenic, winding along the Sea of Cortez.

Punta Colorada
Around 100 km (62 miles) from the airport, taking about 2 hours, depending on conditions. Portions near the coastline may be rougher or unpaved.

Road Conditions in East Cape

The main highway leaving San José del Cabo toward the East Cape (Highway 1) is fully paved and in good condition, offering smooth travel to major points like La Ribera and Los Barriles. However, roads closer to Cabo Pulmo and remote beachfront areas transition to unpaved dirt roads that can be washboarded or uneven. A 4×4 or SUV is recommended if your destination is beyond the main highway or deeper into the East Cape’s off-road sections.

Cabo’s Untamed Coastline

The East Cape stretches along the Sea of Cortez, offering one of the most unspoiled and naturally stunning regions of Baja California Sur. Known for its quiet beaches, turquoise waters, and rugged desert-meets-ocean scenery, the area is a favorite for travelers seeking tranquility away from Cabo’s busier resort zones. It’s a haven for outdoor enthusiasts—popular for world-class fishing, kitesurfing, snorkeling, and diving, especially near the famous Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park. The East Cape’s dirt roads, wide-open landscapes, and small coastal villages give it an authentic Baja charm that feels worlds apart from the bustle of downtown Cabo San Lucas.

Private Villas and Hidden Luxury

While the East Cape is more remote, it’s also home to some of the region’s most exclusive private villas and boutique retreats. These properties range from beachfront estates with infinity pools and open-air living spaces to secluded hillside homes overlooking the Sea of Cortez. Most villas are designed with a focus on privacy and natural beauty—think stone and wood architecture, large terraces, and panoramic ocean views. Whether it’s a luxury family compound or an off-grid hideaway for couples, the East Cape combines the raw beauty of nature with the refined comforts of high-end coastal living.

Gear-Friendly Rides for Divers, Anglers & Kiters

The East Cape is built around what you bring. Sportfishing crews run out of Buena Vista and Los Barriles, the reef at Cabo Pulmo draws divers with tanks and fins, and the steady winter winds at Los Barriles and La Ventana pull kiteboarders and windsurfers from roughly November through March. Our SUVs, Escalades, Navigators, and Sprinter vans have the cargo room for rod tubes, dive bags, and board quivers that a regular taxi simply can’t take — tell us what you’re hauling when you book and we’ll size the vehicle to the gear and the group.

The “Aquarium of the World” — and the Last Miles to It

Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park protects the only living coral reef in the Sea of Cortez, a UNESCO-listed site often called the “Aquarium of the World.” It’s the East Cape’s marquee draw, but the payoff comes with a rough finish: once you pass La Ribera the pavement gives way to several miles of unpaved, washboard road where 15–20 mph is the realistic pace, slower still after summer and early-fall rain. It’s exactly the stretch where a high-clearance SUV and a driver who runs the road regularly earn their keep — we plan the timing around it so you arrive relaxed instead of rattled.

Cabo Airport Shuttle to East Cape Baja Areas

The East Cape of Los Cabos is known for its rugged desert mountains, wide-open beaches, and quiet, off-the-grid atmosphere. Once a hidden stretch of coastline, the area is now growing with luxury resorts and private villa communities while still keeping its wild, untouched charm. Top spots along the East Cape include Cabo Pulmo—famous for its coral reef and world-class diving—plus Costa Palmas and the Four Seasons in La Ribera, Los Barriles, and Punta Colorada, all offering a mix of adventure and laid-back coastal living.
